40 Years of Census Tract Data in an Easy-to-Use Format
Explore changes in U.S. demographics from 1970 to 2000 with the Neighborhood Change Database: 1970-2000 Tract Data from GeoLytics, now available on CD or online. With the Neighborhood Change Database, researchers can examine population transformations in urban communities from 1970 to 2000. The power of this database comes from cross-walking 30 years of census data and normalizing it to 2000 census tract boundaries, thus making census year comparisons easier than ever.
The Neighborhood Change Database is ideal for researchers and demographic analysts who are frustrated and dissatisfied with the time-consuming process of trying to relate changing census boundaries from one decade to the next. With GeoLytics’ proprietary block weighting algorithms, you get accurate calculations for comparing census tract data from the 1970 through 2000 census and to make comparisons in a uniform set of boundaries. For more information, click here
This easy-to-use database has variables and census tract boundaries consistently defined across census years. With census tract populations ranging from 2,500 to 8,000, they typically represent groups of residents with similar demographic characteristics such as economic status, living conditions, and household composition. Census tracts can also be the building blocks to create larger units of analysis for neighborhood comparisons. For added flexibility we have also included the 1970-80-90 data in their year specific tract boundaries.
GeoLytics and the Urban Institute developed the Neighborhood Change Database, with partial funding by the Rockefeller Foundation. It combines tract level data from the 1970 through 2000 decennial censuses. The database has over 1800 variables from the 2000 Census Long Form, 1100 variables from the 1990 Long Form, 1100 variables from the 1980 Long Form, and 800 variables from the 1970 Long Form. For a complete list of variables, click here
Like all of our CensusCD databases, the Neighborhood Change Database has functional mapping capabilities and easily exports geographic boundaries. You can test drive our online version with GeoLytics FREE Census 2000 data. Each data set allows users to access and download data for a single county as a sample test drive. Demographic Data Custom Tailored to your Research Project
GeoLytics offers a wide variety of custom built demographic files, including estimates and projections
, historic data
(1970, 1980, & 1990), and normalized data
(historic data that has been cross-walked to the 2000 geographies), all at reasonable prices. If your latest research project needs data that is not covered by GeoLytics standard product line, we can build the data you need. Or, if you only need a very specific set of data from one of standard products, then let us run just that data for you.
For example, if you need annual projections in addition to the 2006/2011 estimates and projections, we can add the intervening years such as 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. We also sell the earlier estimate years since the 2000 census, such as 2001 through 2005. Likewise, we can run data from an earlier decade. Based on GeoLytics’ sound methodological foundation, we can provide you with the data you need for most research projects and at any of our geographies.
Alternatively, we can fill in the intervening years between historical censuses, such as 1991 through 1999 for the years between the 1990 and 2000 census. If the variables we offer on either our standard or professional estimates aren’t adequate for your needs, let GeoLytics develop new fields and variables specifically for you (depending on the source data that is available). Furthermore, we have multiple geographies available, including the census block, block group, tract, zip code, counties, and state, or we can build new geographies for you.
